| Notes: | Elysian Upright Grand made by the Chappell Company in 1923. Elysian Pianoforte No 25765. It is my understanding that Chappell Piano Company manufactured the Elysian during a period of difficult market conditions. The design was a normal Chappell Piano with a much reduced cheaper of finish. The rest of the piano was the normal Chappell standards. This finish was very dark with no ornamentation. This piano was acquired by my parents in 1958 as a much better piano for me to continue to learn on. They transferred to my ownership in 1971 when I got married. The pitch of the piano at this time was about ¼ tone flat. I took the decision to have the piano retuned to “concert pitch” where it has been maintained ever since by regular 6 month tunings. (Being at concert pitch is very important if you are to play with other instruments, particularly woodwind which have very little scope for altering their pitch.) In the early 90,s I took the decision to have the piano refurbished. The internal mechanisms were overhauled as you will see in the photographs. At the same I decided to have the finish modernised by a furniture specialist. Since then the piano has moved house on two occasions and has acquired a few further marks. However, it looks relatively modern and plays well. I am now only selling it prior to moving to our retirement home where there will not be sufficient room. The purchaser is welcome to the current piano stool if they wish. |
